Adding Revenue to Your Site

Blogging has gone from an online personal diary to a viable source of income. With hundreds of ad companies willing to fill up a blog's white space, there are several money making opportunities. Advertising will even place ads on brand new blogs, take this one for example. It can be difficult deciding which route you want to go for your ads. For the time being, there are several examples on my site. There are text ads, the highlighted words that when you hover over them, an tiny caption box will appear with a related advertisement. Banner Ads, like to google one at the top of my posts. Affiliate programs, I am an amazon affiliate and have a banner at the top. If you follow that link and purchase a product, I receive of percentage of the purchase. These are just a few of the options several companies offer. A new blogger's instinct might be to put as many different types of ads on their site because that will result in the most clicks possible, and they will have that new house in no time right? No.

Placing ads should be a thought out process, so that you can have better Click Through Rates, CTR. To get better click through rates you need focused ads. Not all advertisers out there will give you the best focused ads. It also isn't all on them, you need to write quality content so that when they crawl your website, they can see what topic you are focusing on and give you related ads.

Out of all of the ad sites, my personal favorite, as is the case with many blogs you may have read, is Google Adsense. Especially on Blogger, which is owned by Google, incorporating ads to your site is very easy and provides quality ads that your readers are likely to click on. You can decide where you want to place your ads. Some sites require that you are "before the fold" i.e., visible before readers have to scroll down. Not the case with google, it's your site, you decide where you want the ads. There is also a variety of ad shapes and sizes so you aren't stuck with the same thing which also adds variety to your reader again helping with your CTR. Of course some ad sizes and placements work better than others. More on that later.

Driving Traffic

I have a decent amount of ads running now and with the Amazon Affiliate above, I am switching my focus. All the ads in the world do not matter if there is no one viewing this site. Currently that is the situation so I need to research how to drive traffic to my site. I've added the Spottt icon on the left. Spottt posts links to your site for free on other sites so long as you include the icon on your page.

Now an Amazon Affiliate

As you can see by the banner above. I joined the Amazon Affiliate program. Through this program I receive a percentage of any products that people buy if they were referred by my site.

Some ads starting to kick in

So I checked my page and saw that the AdBrite ads have started to run on my page. I had one ad that was of the full page, skip this ad type so I think I may need to change some settings as that won't get much quality traffic to my site. Also after seeing words working on the LinkWorth section down below, all the highlighted words went away.

Doing the research

Haven't had much time today to do anything with the blog yet. Last night I was looking around problogger and got some tips. I set up with Technorati with the hopes that my blog will begin to get more traffic once I start tagging words and become more involved in the blog world.

3 Ads Running

A few hours in and i think i should have 3 things up. One is the Google Adsense Ad on the right side of the page, another is a Clickbank hoplink at the bottom of my first post which says click here. and the third I had to edit the HTML to put an AdBrite ad on my page, the location is messy and currently it says wait 3 hours for anything to be displayed. So i certainly have some work ahead of me.

Getting some things set up

So it is day 1 of my year long experiment. I did some research at work and without paying for anything!!! I think i figured out how the people who claim they make $5000 a month might actually do it. I started this blog to track my progress and hopefully help some people out who are looking for a little extra income. I doubt I will make the thousands a month like those people claim because I think those are all fakes and are just dummy sites set up to get people to buy $2 programs. As I go along, I will post my progress and offer up what I have learned about what seems to be almost free money. Wish me luck and feel free to ask me any questions.
